Pondering Pisces

Throughout this year, I will be diving into each of the twelve zodiac signs. There is so much to understand about astrology and I am bringing you on my journey as I learn more. I am almost a complete beginner and still putting together the puzzle pieces. Through the lens of each sign, I will be gathering and synthesizing knowledge while also examining my own natal chart more closely.
Everyone has each sign in their own natal chart and the signs influence various aspects of our lives based on several factors. I will do my best to review the basics. Cafeastrology.com is a good way to start learning about your own natal chart. At the end of this post, I will list the books (many I have thrifted) I will be referencing for this post and future posts.
Pisces is actually the last sign of the zodiac and it reigns from February 19th to March 20 as the sun moves through this time period. It is a water sign along with Cancer and Scorpio. Of these three, it is the mutable sign, which means it is more flexible and adaptable. Pisces is ruled by the planet Neptune and is linked to the 12th house in astrology, which governs the subconscious and hidden parts of ourselves such as secrets, sorrows, talents, dreams, troubles, disappointments, and intuition. It can lead to mystical and spiritual realms within ourselves. “I believe” is a saying associated with Pisces energy.
With the above in mind, here are several traits that can describe the energy of Pisces:
Sensitive
Deep emotions, moody
Introspective, reflective
Psychic/Intuitive
Healers
Creative-poet, music
Impressionable, gullible
Compassionate
Adaptive
Illusive, elusive
Kind
Empathetic
Pacifistic
Friendly
Charitable/Self sacrificing
Imaginative
Affectionate, romantic, loving
Sentimental
Escapist
Idealistic
Adventurous
Open-hearted
Generous
Easy going
Pisceans feel deeply for the environment and people around them. In turn, they can over exert themselves emotionally, mentally, and physically on the behalf of others. They can get lost in helping others with their needs. It is important for Pisceans to establish emotional and psychic boundaries. They need time to themselves since it is important for them to connect to their inner world. However, some Pisceans can escape to their inner worlds/imagination and refuse to acknowledge reality when they are facing difficult experiences. Some can be prone to addition or depression.
Some sources state that Pisces energy is a state of paradox, especially when we consider the image for Pisces. Two fish are tied by a cord and swimming opposite directions. Meyer (2021) states the fish represent emotional conflict. Hickey (1970) further explains that one fish represents the personality and the other the soul. As they are “swimming” either the soul will overcome the personality or vice versa, and either one will become a servant to the other(p. 28). Others note that it might represent “swimming” in circles, which can happen to Pisceans because they are constantly in the cycle of wanting to try new things then getting bored easily.
Just this little bit of knowledge is giving me a better idea of the Pisces in my life. My brother and two of my very best friends are Pisces. So I seem to appreciate the energy of Pisces very much. They are all very creative and compassionate people.
In my chart, Venus and my Descendent are found in the sign of Pisces. Venus represents what we love and appreciate: relationships, values, possessions, art, pleasure, finances, aesthetics, etc. Pisces energy is “exalted” with Venus, meaning Pisces (being a very loving energy) feels good with the planet of love. I apparently have high ideals for love and often attracted to the underdog. This has brought some trouble for in the past when I have confused helping the "underdog" with love/affection. I am highly emotional and sensitive. I am very self sacrificing, often to a fault, in relationships. I have affection for all people in my life. Parker and Parker noted that my Venus in Pisces helps tone down the selfishness my Aries Sun could have. It heightens my understanding, inner strength, and empathy.
The Descendent is whatever sign is opposite of one’s Ascendent or Rising Sign. My Rising Sign is Virgo, therefor the opposite is Pisces. The Ascendent sign is always found in the 1st House, so the Descendent will always be found on the cusp of the 7th House. I will elaborate more on the Ascendent signs when we get to Virgo season. The Descendent represents the qualities you seek in a partnership romantic, business, or long term commitments like friendship. I guess that would explain why two of my closest friends are Pisces! I wrote the above statement before knowing this information!
My Venus in Pisces is also in the 7th house. The 7th House relates to partnerships and relationships with people and legal affairs and is ruled by, you guessed it, Venus. So the fact that Venus is in this house, really gives the influence a boost. The sources I reviewed shared that I have tend to have good relationships because I am friendly and a loving person. I yearn to share life with a partner, but may have some difficulties of maintaining my own unique identity because I take on so much from my partner. This can be true for me. My foray into Wicca and witchcraft have certainly been a road to defining an identity unique to me since my spouse does not practice the craft.
There is definitely more information out there! But I feel like this was a good start for me. Below are the references I mentioned earlier. Do you have recommendations for books, podcasts, YouTubers, or Astrology Services?
