This song is very special because I wrote it for my husband and performed it at both of our weddings. We got engaged in May of 2019 and decided to plan for a wedding in October 2020. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic happened and changed things. We were legally married in a small ceremony outside in August of 2020 and then later had a larger ceremony in March of 2022.
The first verse reflects the closeness and intimacy that can happen on a soul level. It is about the communication that needs to happen to discover each other. We met online and seemed to have an instant connection. I am very much an introvert and felt safe and calm with him on our first date, in the midst of a bustling city.
Then the chorus reiterates the feeling that this must have been ‘written in the stars.' It expresses hope that we will be able to share our gifts and uphold fairness in the relationship. In some versions I have practiced, I substitute “that point to what is fair” to “that support/uphold or in reverent care.”
In the second verse, I expresses the trust and vulnerability needed to have mutual understanding. I encourage honest communication so I can know how to help.
The bridge encourages us to focus on love and trust that it will reveal knowledge that will be beneficial to us in our relationship.
This is another song that quickly got developed with more layers. I typically don’t create long intros, but this loop was so beautiful. It is in ¾ time and I was working toward making flowy phrasing that kept a feeling of moving forward. Out of all the songs I have written, I think this is the only one that has a key change! I think this could be reflective of the change that comes with opening up to others and growing together.
Lean in closer, more than you should
Trace the maze between our worlds
Speak to me, without any words
Show me what your heart yearns for
A star written song
That we’ve sung forever long
The gifts we will share
That point to what is fair
Trust my vow, of vulnerability
The making of mutuality
Let me know, how you really feel
Hidden hurts are hard to heal
Bridge:
We can’t ignore what’s real
Let’s find out what love reveals
A star written song
That we’ve sung forever long
The gifts we will share
That point to what is fair
